It’s hard to go wrong with Agnieska Holland.

Trailer

Rating: C+
Commentary: It reminds me a bit of the overly simplistic sales approach used by Life Is Beautiful 13 years ago. While this is an effective image, it’s a bit too minimalist for my taste.
Rating: B+
Commentary: It looks like a Polish-language Schindler’s List. Agnieska Holland has an interesting visual style and tends to love Jewish stories set during World War II, so it’s not likely to disappoint.

Oscar Chances: Right now, this film is poised to triumph over Iran’s A Separation in the Foreign Language Film race. The Academy’s older Jewish voting bloc has shown time and time again that they favor Holocaust dramas for Best Foreign Language Film and unless a lot of fans of Iran’s entry get together and vote as a group, this film is very likely to sweep past the various critics groups that praised A Separation and give it the win.
