With two new wide releases, both coming on the heels of the success of Smile, the weekend’s top spot is up for grabs. Likely to come in first is kids book adaptation Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile with original music by The Greatest Showman composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and sung by Shawn Mendes. The film has all the earmarks for a solid box office performer, while its competition does not. David O. Russell has made some popular films, but his most popular ones were major Oscar players and Amsterdam is not that, so I don’t expect it to do much business.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer didn’t do much for me and while I’ve liked many of Russell’s prior films, his recent attitude has soured me on him.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated film looks like an all-star mess.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Before seeing the nonsensical trailer, I thought this would be an Oscar contender. Now I think it will come and go quickly as it does not seem to know what it wants to be.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It has a somewhat adorable trailer, but I’m not sure it’s really my style.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I know absolutely nothing about the supposed popular children’s book this is based on.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This will probably be fine for kids, but it might prove a chore for adults to sit through.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m interested in the premise, but not the trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Uninteresting looking Spanish horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews made it sound interesting, but the trailer does not really make me want to see this horror film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer was a jumbled mess, which doesn’t help me want to see yet another possession film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Umpteenth film with the same title looks like a feeble horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The setting seems promising, but a murky trailer does not sell the film and probably will deter some viewers.

Wesley Lovell (WL): It has some funny moments in the trailer, so it might be worth checking out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Belabored comedy looks awfully dumb.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer boasts little humor, but gives hints that there might be an interesting film underneath.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s a charming cast, but it looks overly manipulative.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Offbeat romantic comedy looks different enough to be compelling.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer tries too hard and still does not convince that this is wholly original or even worth seeing.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I love Cate Blanchett, but none of the trailers have done much for me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Acclaimed festival hit provides Cate Blanchett with another strong character to play.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am perplexed by the trailer, but the reviews make the movie and especially Cate Blanchett’s performance sound like something worth seeing.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Danish Cannes Festival winner could be the year’s funniest film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It sounds good on paper, but the baffling trailer does not interest me much, though the director has done some good work before, so perhaps it will be worth seeing.
