There’s only one new wide release this weekend and that’s because there is no film that could successfully compete with it. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a sequel to the $700+ million dollar blockbuster Black Panther, is sure to dominate the box office for the next few weeks until the Avatar releases in December. That’s quite a bit of time, though, so whether it can stay at the top of the box office all those intervening weeks, I don’t know. Suffice it to say, reigning 3-week champion Black Adam will hand over its crown to the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe entry.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first film was fantastic and the trailers for this one have been solid. I’m very hopeful this one can live up to its predecessor’s reputation.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Black Panther sequel looks interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The first picture was good, it will be interesting to see where they go without Chadwick Boseman as lead.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The premise is familiar, but some elements of the trailer make the film look mildly interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another dumb horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Nothing in the trailer of this horror film inspires me to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a generic battle of the sexes movie without a solid rooting interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Brainless looking comedy.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A funny film could be made with this premise, but this does not look to be it.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film should be a major Oscar contender.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This semi-autobiographical film from Steven Spielberg is one of the most looked forward to films of the year. Expect lots of nominations.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While some elements of the premise are interesting, it still somewhat feels like a Hellraiser simulacrum that’s less leathery.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The week’s second dumb horror movie.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This horror film had worn out its welcome before the trailer was done.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Could be very intriguing even if only because of the cast.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Poorly reviewed World War II melodrama released internationally as Burning at Both Ends looks like a quick flop.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be a decent film about a part of World War II that few of us know, but it may not be good enough to succeed.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Dustin Hoffman has formally returned to acting, but this doesnโ€™t look like it’s worthy of his talents.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dustin Hoffman’s son and Sissy Spacek’s daughter supported by their parents seems worth a look.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Casting father/son and mother/daughter combos is a neat gimmick, but it looks like a pretty lame romantic comedy. Sissy Spacek comes off best in the trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I wasn’t terribly excited about seeing The Father and this one hasn’t quite piqqued my interests either, but Hugh Jackman’s presence might be worth it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early awards favorite now seems down to Hugh Jackman in Best Actor.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I had really liked writer/director Florian Zeller’s last film The Father, and was looking forward to this one. Unfortunately this family drama does not look to be as good a film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not quite sold on the concept, but I’m sold on Ryan Reynolds and Octavia Spencer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This dumbed down take on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is painful to see.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I like new musicals, but this one feels forced and reliant solely on the charms of Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, and that may not be enough for a full length film.
