Wesley Lovell: Before the Costume Designers Guild awards, Dune was doing fairly well, keeping apace with Cruella. However, since then, the CDG, followed immediately by BAFTA and CCA, managed to clarify that this is Cruella‘s race to lose, something I called back when I first saw the trailer. I also thought it would dominate in Production Design and Makeup & Hairstyling, but those I was mistaken on.
Peter J. Patrick: Cruella has this in the bag, but if there is an upset, I think it will go the knockout period costumes in Nightmare Alley.
Tripp Burton: For some reason, of all the design categories this seems to be one that the Academy will often look beyond the Best Picture lineup for winners. This year, the outlandish costumes of Cruella seem made for an Oscar. If a Best Picture nominee sneaks in here, it could be the glorious colors of West Side Story or the dystopian looks of Dune.
Thomas La Tourrette: Cruella has become the film to beat, and it looks to be the winner. For quite awhile, Dune had been the frontrunner, but that started changing over time. They each won a guild award, but Cruella has pulled ahead with wins from the Critics Choice and BAFTA. It is a film about fashion, which always helps a film’s chances. I do not see anything beating it at this point. West Side Story boasted bright, colorful costumes and Nightmare Alleyโ€™s ran the gamut from the worn-down carnival folk to fashionably chic gowns. In a different year either might have easily won, but not now. Cyrano never seemed to have a chance. Dune has an outside chance, but Cruella should easily win.
