Precursor: 3rd Hollywood Critics Nominations (2019)

The Hollywood Critics Association got out of the gate first among critics organizations, but their newness isn’t something that speaks to credibility. They seemed to love Quentin Tarantino’s film more than others while several titles earned strong nomination sets in spite of earlier letdowns (Waves and The Farewell for example). Still, Bombshell, which earned 9 nominations, didn’t make their Best Picture slate, nor did Little Women, which is supposed to be a major Oscar player this year. Ford v. Ferrari and The Two Popes both took hits form this group with few nominations. Harriet, Just Mercy, and Pain & Glory (nominated only in Foreign Film) were largely or completely ignored despite early buzz. We’ll see if this is an outlier or an example once the elder groups select their winners.
