One of the myriad national organizations around the world that hand out awards in a similar vein to the Academy Awards, the Golden Eagle Awards are the Russian equivalent. With a single film for non-native productions, Hollywood gets a small bit of recognition each year. This year, it was with titles Green Book, The Lion King, and Once Upon a Time… in America. What’s interesting about this list is that last year’s Best Picture winner is on the last, one of this year’s less well received films, and one of this year’s best received films. It’s an odd list and not terribly reflective of the American product, but what can you expect from a nation that probably doesn’t receive most of the more politically charged films.

On the local side, T-34 and Odessa were the dominant films scooping up more than 20 nominations between them. When most categories have only three nominees, that’s pretty exceptional. Matter of fact, T-34 earned nominations in all but two categories it was eligible for, Best Supporting Actress and Best Music. Beanpole, 2019’s Russian submission to the Best International Feature category at the Oscars pulled in a measly 5 nominations. That Oscar-shortlisted film did pick up a Feature Film citation, but with three other films earning more nominations and tying with the technical category-dominant The Conquest of Siberia, I would expect too much in terms of awards prospects. That is if this group is as devoted to nominations leaders as the Academy once was.
