Precursor: 11th Make-Up Artists Guild Nominations (2019)

The big surprise of these nominations is the triple nomination for Bombshell, a film that never seemed like the kind of film to earn nominations from this group. The Irishman is also surprising considering the de-aging technology used on that film, which will likely make it Oscar-ineligible. Rocketman is certainly no surprise and Joker also seems like a solid Oscar contender. The rest are a bit questionable.

  1. Wow! Special Make-Up Effects nod for Bombshell? Well, that’s guaranteed it’ll get a nomination.

That said, here’s how I see Hair and Make-Up playing out:

    (most likely)
    – Bombshell (Bill Corso & Kazu Hiro)
    – Joker
    – Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood
    – Rocketman (Jan Archibald & Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou)

    (Strong Possibilities)
    – Dolemite is My Name
    – The Goldfinch (Bill Corso)
    – The Irishman
    – Loro (from the same make-up team that gave us Il Divo: Aldo Signoretti, who also did Apocalypto & Moulin Rouge)
    – My thoughts here are there’s usually at least one foreign contender (Border, A Man Called Ove, etc)

    (Long Shots)
    – Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
    – Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (I think there’s an outside chance…for now)

Thanks to this list, the other possibilities that could sneak in here are: Hellboy, Jojo Rabbit, Downton Abbey, Ford v Ferrari & Little Women. Very VERY long shot would be Aladdin for the work on Will Smith, which is technically impressive, but that got overlooked here, so it may not be as highly regarded.
