Without a single trailer announcing its release, a film called The Empty Man opens wide this weekend. It is a horror film from the Fox banner, which may explain why it’s being unceremoniously dumped into the pre-Halloween frame. What Disney hopes to accomplish with this move is uncertain, but a great weekend at the box office will not be the end result.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This tween-targeted looks like every other tween-targeted romantic adaptation and that’s not at all appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Apparently the second in a series of four adaptations of a series of young adult novels, it looks like a dud to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I did not see the earlier film After, and while this seems to boast lots of sexual action among a young and good looking crowd, the characters do not seem terribly interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m sure it will be well observed, but the trailer makes it feel rather morose.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another minor film from Wayne Wang who hasn’t made a really good one since The Joy Luck Club.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Children looking after ailing parents has been done many times, and this may prove better than average but it has a rather lackluster trailer, so perhaps not.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer has some funny moments in it, but not enough to make it look like it might actually be fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Directorial debut of an actress I’ve never heard of is coming in the wrong year for a Thanksgiving comedy.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There was more humor in the trailer than I expected, but I am dubious that it will hold up through an entire movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It might be a wonderful family film, but the trailer just wasn’t for me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well-intentioned film about death from a child’s perspective seems unfocused.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not certain what the trailer is about, though parts look interesting, though a couple early reviews make it sound very amateurish.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This story has been told several times from different perspectives and while this doesn’t look entirely interesting, it at least looks mildly entertaining.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Philosophical sci-fi thriller looks to be the most intriguing of this week’s batch of minor film releases.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A confusing trailer does not help sell the film, but it feels like there is enough there to make me want to see it.
