The two best contenders for a #1 finish this weekend couldn’t be more different. Charlie’s Angels is a reboot of the popular TV show and its successful first adaptation. This one doesn’t have the bigger names like its predecessor film did, but it still has a lot going for it. On the other side of the coin is Ford v Ferrari, a racing drama about the attempts at Ford to stop Ferrari for eternally dominating racing. The two films are targeting vastly different audiences and while I suspect Ford v Ferrari will give the Angels a run for their money, I think, in the end, that Charlie’s Angels will eke out a narrow victory.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A slightly more diverse cast than the previous incarnation and Elizabeth Banks is involved, so it could be quite fun. Yet, the trailers don’t make that promise.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Appears to be an improvement over the last incarnation but that isn’t saying much.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I don’t know that we needed another Charlie’s Angels reboot, but, that said, it looks like a fun escapist film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Early word is strong, but that doesn’t make this auto racing film more palatable.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated actioner has already won three precursor Hollywood Film Awards.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It sounds like it is an exciting film about a subject that might not lend itself well to film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I love everyone involved, but reviews have been mixed with most screenings not having taken place yet. That is worrisome, but it could be fun nonetheless.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Twisty thriller with two legendary actors playing cat and mouse should be interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I like the actors and some of Bill Condon’s films, so it might be a lot of fun if it does not try to be too clever.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Nothing about this comedy seems fresh or interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dreadful looking Christmas comedy set in 1983.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a bad family comedy and the trailer did nothing to redeem it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks to be a garden variety cop thriller and that’s just not enough reason to see it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Routine police procedural doesn’t look too impressive.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): One rogue cop against the world, this film has been made before, and, judging by the trailer, done much better.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Not a terribly compelling trailer doesn’t suggest a very compelling film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Thriller pitting one man against Big Pharma at least offers something different.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I wanted to like this thriller as the concept sounded good, but the trailer looks cheesy and just not that well made.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): An important story “for our times” that could be most fascinating.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Annette Bening’s spot-on take on Dianne Feinstein seems to be the film’s strongest Oscar contender.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could prove a good thriller along the lines of Spotlight. It may pull off Oscar noms for picture and supporting actress.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s a moment of Indian history that might be compelling, but the trailers don’t sell it well.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Historical drama about a real-life Indian Wonder Woman vs. the British Empire seems worth a watch.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This epic story that few probably know could prove exciting. I just hope they do not concentrate too much on the British men but on the Rani of Jhansi.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Uninspiring animation doesn’t make this film look terribly exciting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Chinese animated feature looks interesting if unexceptional.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): While it tries to tell an epic tale, the animation looks to be at best mediocre which will probably keep it fairly obscure and away from the Oscars.
