The holdovers are doing well and the new releases are doing poorly so far this year, which means that this week’s new releases aren’t likely to be box office toppers, though Gretel and Hansel has a better chance at it than does The Rhythm Section.

Wesley Lovell (WL): You’ll want to make time for this one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A great 3-day opportunity for Oscar watchers to catch up with the nominees.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I always look forward to seeing these to see what people are doing with them.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A rather uninspiring looking version of the familiar fairy tale.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Revisionist take on the Grimm fairy tale from Tony Perkins’ son might be too scary for kids.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer tries to scare us, but it seemed more pointless and boring instead.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another unexceptional looking revenge thriller.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quirky thriller with a title that suggests a musical seems awfully odd.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a good cast is wasted in a muddled, mediocre movie. The trailer does little to excite or to explain what is happening.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): With a trailer as poorly made as this one, what hope does one have for the film itself.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting looking thriller but I’m always a bit suspicious of films that debut at major film festivals and fail to get Oscar qualifying runs.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews are very good, but the trailer does not get across the plot well nor make much of a case for the movie itself.
