A new number one is likely with this week’s debut of Call of the Wild starring Harrison Ford. It’s an adaptation of a well known novel by Jack London and the previews definitely sell it as a one-of-a-kind adventure between a man and his dog. Unlike this week’s other debut, Brahms: The Boy II, Call of the Wild is an original with a beloved star tackling a young audience with families going in tow. That should be enough for it to pull off a number one finish.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I never saw the first film and this one looks rather tedious.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The first was a nice surprise, but the twice delayed release of the sequel is not a good omen.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Mansions in the woods and lifelike dolls, it feels like this has been done many times.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The effects are enough to make this look interesting even if we don’t know sufficient information about it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not sure how today’s audiences relate to Jack London, but after 85 years I guess we were due for an updated version.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I like the book and Harrison Ford, but the dog never looks real and it feels like it is a different story than the original.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A good period comedy is hard to find and the first trailer made this look as if it had that kind of potential.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early reviews for this latest version of Jane Austen’s novel have been good.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be a decent version of the Jane Austen novel and early reviews are good. So why is it being dumped in a February release?

Wesley Lovell (WL): I never had an interest in the Jackass movies, this holds no interest either.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a bunch of nonsense.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I do not know the group, but the trailer looks full of stupid jokes and I do not want to waste my time seeing this.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer looks a bit predictable, but also like it might be just a touch of fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like more nonsense.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A love story about a man off his meds does not sound that promising, and the trailer certainly does not encourage me to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The cast looks good, but the film looks unexceptional.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Voyeuristic thriller has a good cast but it’s unclear from the trailer how well they’re used.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This might be better than a standard thriller, but I am not sure that it really will prove to be that.
