Horror and stupid comedies generally make big splashes on rental charts but here they make a big splash on the sales chart with The Ringer taking the number one spot and When a Stranger Calls coming in shotgun. Other new entries include the movie-to-musical theater-to-movie musical The Producers coming in at a strong 4th and the dreadful Doogal finishing 8th with swirl-themed romance Something New newly arrived at 9.

Sales Chart: July 1, 2006 (Source: Billboard Magazine)

  1. Underworld: Evolution
  2. Firewall
  3. Glory Road
  4. Dumbo
  5. Running Scared
  6. High School Musical: Encore Edition
  7. Date Movie
  8. Cheaper by the Dozen 2
  9. Entourage: The Complete Second Season
  10. Charmed: The Complete Fifth Season

While Firewall took the rental chart in its debut, Underworld: Evolution bumps from second on that chart to first on the sales chart. It’s clear that Underworld ‘s niche audience is more interested in owning it than renting it. For the first time since I’ve been monitoring two television series put season compilations into the chart.

  1. The Pink Panther
  2. 16 Blocks

  5. Aquamarine
  6. Glory Road
  7. Firewall
  8. High School Musical: Encore Edition
  9. Dumbo
  10. Neil Young: Heart of Gold

The Pink Panther debuts at the top of the charts not surprisingly. There isn’t much really to be shocked about here except Firewall‘s noticeable plunge to 7 from 2.

Sales Chart: July 15, 2006 (Source: Billboard Magazine)

  1. Eight Below
  2. The Hills Have Eyes
  3. Syriana
  4. The Pink Panther
  5. Underworld: Evolution
  6. Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure
  7. 16 Blocks
  8. High School Musical: Encore Edition
  9. Aquamarine
  10. Glory Road

Syriana may have been the top rental last week, but two films of genres that are immensely more own-able topped it in sales. Eight Below took in the kiddie/parent crowd while HIlls Have Eyes capitalized on the horror fanbase. High School Musical doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere any time soon but the rest of the chart is typically fluid.

  7. The Tyler Perry Collection: Why Did I Get Married?
  8. The Hills Have Eyes
  9. Syriana
  10. Leroy & Stitch

Failure to Launch, as expected, debuted at the top this week. Madea’s Family Reunion pulled a decent second place finish. The only unexpected aspect was that only three of last week’s Top 10 Sales vehicles stayed another week on the chart.

  1. Failure to Launch
  2. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
  3. Eight Below

  5. The Matador
  6. Ultraviolet
  7. Annapolis
  8. The Tyler Perry Collection: Madea Goes to Jail
  9. Syriana
  10. High School Musical: Encore Edition

With its stellar performance in rentals, it’s no surprise that Failure to Launch remained on top against the only debut The Matador which failed even more strongly on this chart than on the video chart. Things aren’t likely to change when Basic Instinct 2 comes out next week. The big surprises here are the return to the top 10 of two other films. High School Musical seems to be steaming along as it returns to the 10th position but even more unlikely, though expected considering its performance at the box office, the original Pirates of the Caribbean rises from the depths like its storied undead to wreak havoc on the top 10 sales chart.

We were unable to obtain the August 5 chart, but we’re back on track with the chart for the 12th. She’s the Man debuts at the top of the chart followed by ATL. Pirates stays strong on the sales chart while its couterpart is falling on the box office chart. High School Musical is doing phenomenally well after 9 weeks on the chart.

  7. Chappelle’s Show: The Lost Episodes Uncensored
  8. She’s the Man
  9. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
  10. Van Helsing

Another week without a chart. It makes it very hard to see patterns. However, we do know that The Bencwarmers was #1 last week and has fallen to 3. Final Destination 3 debuted at #2 and fell to position 4. Spider-Man 2 leaps into the 5th spot after lingering last week at #12. Failure to Launch has rebounded from no. 8. Last week’s #3, Chappelle’s Show: The Lost Episodes Uncensored fell four positions while She’s the Man is beating a similarly hasty retreat from 4 to 8. Pirates mania is slipping as Curse of the Black Pearl falls to #9. Van Helsing rises from #35 all the way to #10. This week’s two new entries are The Shaggy Dog at #2 and the unsurprising debut of V for Vendetta at #1.

  7. The Benchwarmers
  8. Laguna Beach: The Complete Second Season
  9. Prison Break: Season One
  10. Final Destination 3

V for Vendetta toppled from the top spot after one week to be replaced by Inside Man. Only last week’s The Shaggy Dog, The Benchwarmers and Final Destination 3 stuck around on the chart. The direct-to-video sequel Bring It On: All or Nothing edged out Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector for the number 3 position.

  7. Bring It On: All or Nothing
  8. Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector
  9. Hoot
  10. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

RV positioned itself at the top of this week’s sales chart beating out rival Scary Movie 4. Meanwhile, The Simpsons’ Eighth Season DVD makes the highest debut of a television program I’ve yet seen. Pirates can’t stay down as it re-enters the top 10 for the second time this year.

  5. Just My Luck
  6. Inside Man
  7. House M.D.: Season Two
  8. V for Vendetta
  9. The Perfect Man
  10. Phat Girlz

How does a video game-based rental dud manage to be the top seller? It’s impossible to tell but Silent Hill managed to top Poseidon at the top of the chart. TV show House proves potent on the sales chart opening at position 7.

Sales Chart: September 23, 2006 (Source: Billboard Magazine)

  6. Poseidon
  7. Silent Hill
  8. South Park: The Complete Eighth Season
  9. RV
  10. Friends with Money

It is officially a dreadful period for movies. Not only does a direct-to-video animated sequel top the sales chart but continuing weak performances on other charts are creating the impression that people aren’t enjoying their movies. Brother Bear 2, purportedly one of Disney’s last direct-to-videos sequels to be produced topped The Sentinel, Take the Lead and Akeelah & the Bee all against expectations (namely, it hasn’t appeared at all on the rental chart).

  6. Akeelah & the Bee
  7. RV
  8. Poseidon
  9. Silent Hill
  10. Inside Man

Since I’ve been tracking, this week’s chart is the first on which a television series premieres at the top. Lost‘s second season tops this week’s chart while most of the rest of the chart stays virtually the same, shifting down only slightly. United 93 debuts behind Lost.

Sales Chart: October 7, 2006 (Source: Billboard Magazine)

  5. Star Wars
  6. The Empire Strikes Back
  7. Return of the Jedi
  8. The Office: Season Two
  9. United 93
  10. Lost: The Complete Second Season

The sales chart is brand new this week with the exception of last week’s top 2, Lost season 2 fell from first to tenth place while United 93 fell from 2 to 9. The rest of the top 10 is completely new with three re-releases and three television series. The Wild, however, ended up the top dog of the pack, the only kids-friendly film in the top 10. Grey’s Anatomy season 2 came in at position 2. Smallville‘s fifth season came in at position four and The Office: Season Two premiered in 8th. Star Wars and its sequels Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedifell into release order in positions five, six and seven. Lucky Number Slevin, the leader of the rentals chart for two weeks fills out the top 10 debuts at number 3 .

  7. Battlestar Galactica: Season 2.5
  8. Lucky Number Slevin
  9. Grease
  10. Brother Bear 2: The Moose Are on the Loose

What an embarrassing week. Not only did The Wild fail to hold on to the top spot, a direct-to-video Barbie movie topped the chart. The 12 Dancing Princesses becomes the second such video to top the chart marking a decidedly weak period in the sales charts. Meanwhile, the last direct-to-video top-spot debut, Brother Bear 2, returned to the top 10 at number 10.

  10. Barbie in The 12 Dancing Princesses

Not terribly surprising, but nonetheless unexpected, The Little Mermaid tops the rentals top debuter X-Men: The Last Stand. The trilogy box set for the X-Men also debuts high at number 5. Unexpectedly placing in the top 10, unlike most other non-animated re-releases, the Scarface: Special Edition debuted at position 8.

  8. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
  9. A Prairie Home Companion
  10. The Lake House

Adam Sandler’s Click tops this week’s sales chart just ahead of last week’s #1 and #2 films, which slide slightly one position each. Waist Deep debuts in the fourth position while feline sequel Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties limps in at fifth. The Fox and the Hound, one of Disney’s most recent pulled-from-the-vaults release, found limited success debuting below Garfield. A Prairie Home Companion was better received as a rental than as asales offering as it premiere’s at position 9.

Not surprising anyone, Over the Hedge debuted in the top spot sending last week’s number 1, Click tumbling to number 3. The Break-Up didn’t live up to its rental chart performance finishing second while The Omen enters the chart at number 5.

  10. The OC: The Complete Third Season

One animated film tops the other as Monster House debuts at the top of the sales chart. Despite a decline in quality, The OC: Complete Third Season still managed a top 10 debut. Surprisingly, Nacho Libre was not very popular with sales as it wasn’t on the rental chart finishing third after last week’s number one.

Having missed a week, it’s hard to correctly parallel the sales and rentals chart but they’ve matched perfectly except the debut last week of Cars at the number one spot. Otherwise, the charts carry few surprises.

As it topped the rental chart, Superman Returns also tops the sales chart. Over the Hedge returns to the top 10 along with five other new entries in this week’s top 10.

  8. The Da Vinci Code

  10. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is no surprise to top the sales chart for this week. It even pulls in the long-off-the-charts prequel The Curse of the Black Pearl into the top 10. More than half the chart is gone replaced by new DVDs Miami Vice, Beerfest, 24 (Season 5) and The Polar Express (returning to the top 10 for the second time this holiday season).

Pirates bounces back into the top spot after being tossed out by number-three-this-week Talladega Nights last week. Invincible debuted well in second place while Step Up managed to push Devil Wears Prada down to five. Little Miss Sunshine had a weak debut on the sales chart at number 6 after a luminous number-two debut at the rental chart.

Action proves too tempting to avoid as Crank tops the sales chart. Last week’s number 1 plummets to 7th place. Animated films Barnyard and Cars return to the top 10 this week. The Illusionist proves popular with its second place premiere this week ahead of the MTV movie Jackass: Number Two.

  10. Little Miss Sunshine

After its debut on the top of the rental charts, Saw III‘s number one premiere on the sales chart isn’t very surprising either. Little Miss Sunshine returns to the top 10 after week’s of strong buzz and it’s burgeoning Best Picture Oscar buzz.

  8. Hollywoodland
  9. The Guardian
  10. Saw III

Disney direct-to-video sequel Cinderella III beat out Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers for the top spot on this week’s sales chart. It’s premiere highlights two things. The first is that Eastwood’s Flags is virtually a financial disaster, having failed first at the box office and now on the sales chart. The second is that the sales chart is indelibly weak during the early months of each year otherwise a third-rate animated sequel can top the chart.

We now know why Flushed Away did so abysmally on the rental chart. Instead of renting it, most households bought it, bringing Flushed Away to the top of this week’s sales chart.

The Departed returned to the top of the sales chart to spend its second week at the top, making it the first such film this year to do so. Next week, however, Borat should easily knock the Scorsese flick from the number one spot.

Following its successful debut on the top of the rental chart, Borat topped the sales chart just ahead of the reissue of Peter Pan. South Park‘s ninth season opened at 8 and the rest of the chart saw standard downard movement. The Secret broke that trend and edged up one more position to sixth showing amazing staying power.

  5. Borat
  6. The Holiday
  7. Peter Pan
  8. The Nativity Story
  9. The Departed
  10. Everyone’s Hero

Despite its third-place opening on the rental chart, Eragon manages to top the sales list just above its competitor Blood Diamond. Films that focus on younger audiences tend to do significantly better on the sales chart than the rental as many parents buy them to allow their children to watch repeatedly. Next week, we should see a top-spot finish of Happy Feet.

DVD Sales Chart: April 21, 2007 (Source: Billboard Magazine)

  1. Happy Feet
  2. The Pursuit of Happyness
  3. Children of Men
  4. Eragon
  5. Blood Diamond
  6. Casino Royale
  7. Rocky Balboa
  8. Peter Pan
  9. Borat
  10. The Holiday

As expected, Happy Feet topped the sales chart and isn’t likely to leave next week, even against the opening of Charlotte’s Web. Everything else pretty much slid down the chart one spot with only Peter Pan losing less ground.

  1. Happy Feet
  2. Charlotte’s Web
  3. The Pursuit of Happyness
  4. The Good Shepherd
  5. Eragon
  6. Casino Royale
  7. Peter Pan
  8. Blood Diamond
  9. Jump In!
  10. Flushed Away

As expected, Charlotte’s Web failed to knock the penguins of Happy Feet from their top place berth.

DVD Sales Chart: May 5, 2007 (Source: Billboard Magazine)

  1. Happy Feet
  2. Charlotte’s Web
  3. The Pursuit of Happyness
  4. The Good Shepherd

  6. Casino Royale
  7. Blood Diamond

Happy Feet spends its third week at the top of the sales chart. It’s likely to fall next week against more competition than the fifth-plae finish of Bobby.

2009

Top DVD Sales: March 22, 2009

I have no commentary on this list at this time.

Top DVD Sales: March 29, 2009

Twilight manages to spend a second week in the number one position on the top sales chart. Quantum of Solace can’t dislodge the tween romantic drama and winds up in second place with the second week in release for Bolt leaps into the top 10 to land at #3.

Top DVD Sales: April 5, 2009

Marley & Me pulled into the top spot pushing Twilight out of the number one position. Slumdog Millionaire did better opening on the sale chart than it did on rental while Twilight ended up behind it at #3.

Top DVD Sales: April 12 2009

The highest debut of a new release was number 5 where the big renter The Day the Earth Stood Still failed to perform well for sales. Neither did Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man or animated flick The Tale of Despereaux.

Top DVD Sales: April 19 2009

Marley & Me taking the top spot is certainly not a surprise, especially since it’s a DVD-buy-friendly property. The Spirit should have opened higher and The Reader is surprisingly far up the list for being a rather difficult subject matter.

Top DVD Sales: April 26, 2009

While The Wrestler topped the rental chart, Notorious captures the top of the sales chart with Wrestler close behind and Frost/Nixon opening at #7.

Top DVD Sales: May 3, 2009

No surprises as most of last week’s positions for the debuts of the rental charts match identically, film-and-position.

Top DVD Sales: May 10, 2009

Without a surprise, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button topped the sale chart this week and may very well hold it next week as Taken, the film that is most likely to challenge it, doesn’t seem like the kind of movie people like to own.

Top DVD Sales: May 17, 2009

I guess Taken really could sell copies as it pushes Benjamin Button out of the top spot. More surprising is that Underworld: Rise of the Lycans ended up in second, pushing the entire trilogy set into the Top 10 as well.

Top DVD Sales: May 24, 2009

As has been the trend of the last several weeks, the top film of the rental chart also debuts atop the sales chart. Now, if you’ve ever wondered why the sales chart is always released a week behind, that is largely due to the source I use to collect the data. Billboard posts the sales data for two weeks prior whereas imdb posts the rental data for the previous week.

Top DVD Sales: May 31, 2009

Another week at the top for Paul Blart while the new release of box office dud New in Town made a weak sales debut at #4.

Top DVD Sales: June 7, 2009

Making its way to the top of the sales chart, as it did the rentals, He’s Just Not That Into You is doing as solidly as most romcoms.

Top DVD Sales: June 14, 2009

As fully expected, Gran Torino takes the top of the sales chart. the big question is whether it can hold on next week and fend of Madea Goes to Jail and Friday the 13th on this chart was well.

Top DVD Sales: June 21, 2009

Carrying over almost identically to the sales chart, Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino maintains its second week atop the list.

Top DVD Sales: June 28, 2009

Last week’s big rental opener came in at 9th on the sales chart. Meanwhile, the film I would have expected to open atop the rental chart did open atop the sales chart.

Top DVD Sales: July 5, 2009

John Cena was actually able to top the Sales chart after failing to steal the top of the rental chart from Clint.

Top DVD Sales: July 12, 2009

The three top openers on the rental chart last week carried through their top three positions on the sales chart. Please note that the source of my weekly reports has changed and is now obtained from the-numbers.com.

Top DVD Sales: July 19, 2009

Knowing was not able to hold the top of the sales chart for a second week like it did the rentals, so The Haunting in Connecticut claims the crown. The rest seem to have just shifted down with the previous installments of recent blockbusters surge back into the Top 10 (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Transformers).

Top DVD Sales: July 26, 2009

Carrying over to the sale chart, Watchmen leads a lackluster list with plenty of TV series, which indicates either popularity among the shows or a weak week.

Top DVD Sales: August 2, 2009

Knocking Watchmen off the top of the sales chart was fairly quick considering it was surmounted by Fast & Furious, hardly a thinkable conclusion considering their respective box office takes.

Top DVD Sales: August 9, 2009

A result much more in line with my expectations. Apparently parents don’t rent much anymore, but they do buy outright propelling Race to Witch Mountain ahead of Obsessed to top the sales chart. Meanwhile, it’s such a dull week for releases that three films (positions 8, 9 and 10) are filled with DVD releases from 2005.

Top DVD Sales: August 16, 2009

And this is the result I expected on the rentals chart last week. 17 Again dominates the tween market leaving I Love You, Man in the dust.

Top DVD Sales: August 23, 2009

As I suggested last week, Hannah Montana: The Movie was the top seller this week largely because those who plan to own don’t rent. The Last House on the Left came in second while a series of new TV series releases filled up most of the new spots in the top 10, including a boffo debut of Dexter: Season 3 at #3.

Top DVD Sales: August 30, 2009

And Hannah Montana sticks the top for a second week and Fighting manages to outdo Duplicity.

Top DVD Sales: September 6, 2009

Carryovers are fun. State of Play tops the sales chart. Heroes, despite losing ground in the ratings and shedding fans like a snake’s skin, still managed to debut at number 2.

Top DVD Sales: September 13, 2009

State of Play drops dramatically this week, falling to #6 while the first TV show I can remember tops the list: The Office (5).

Top DVD Sales: September 20, 2009

It’s no surprise that X-Men: Origins: Wolverine topped the sales chart or that the latest Barbie video came in second.

Top DVD Sales: September 27, 2009

Hugh Jackman trumps Matthew McConaughey as Ghosts of Girlfriends Past fails to break the Wolverine‘s hold on the top of the sales chart.

Top DVD Sales: October 4, 2009

Either househoulds are weary of buying every special edition that comes out each year for old films or Monsters vs. Aliens was really that popular. It managed to top the 70th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz on the sales chart.

Top DVD Sales: October 11, 2009

A second week at the top makes for a harsh first week for the box office dud Year One.

Top DVD Sales: October 18, 2009

It’s like home video owners felt the same way as home video renters. Needless to say, Will Farrell’s failure is modestly satisfying.

Top DVD Sales: October 25, 2009

Another shocking top spot finish for Transformers 2.
