As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences).

We went from dullness over a two-week period to an influx of critics awards flooding our minds this past week. It’s hard to parse every one of these awards without coming to similar conclusions as the past, but trends are to be followed and this is what the last week has looked like.

But, before we get into this week’s winners and losers, let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week:

Week 7 (Tue.-Mon.)

Tuesday, Jan. 11 – Austin Critics (Awards) (Official)
Tuesday, Jan. 11 – Hawaii Critics (Awards) (Official)
Tuesday, Jan. 11 – AARP (Awards) (Unconfirmed)
Tuesday, Jan. 11 – Make-Up Artists Guild (Nominations) (Official)
Wednesday, Jan. 12 – Screen Actors (Nominations) (Official)
Thursday, Jan. 13 – Writers Guild (Nominations) (Official)
Friday, Jan. 14 – Denver Critics (Awards) (Unconfirmed)
Friday, Jan. 14 – Georgia Critics (Awards) (Official)
Friday, Jan. 14 – Hawaii Critics (Nominations) (Official)
Saturday, Jan. 15 – The Governors Awards (Postponed)
Sunday, Jan. 16 – Toronto Critics (Awards) (Official)
Monday, Jan. 17 – Seattle Critics (Awards) (Official)
Monday, Jan. 17 – African American Critics (Awards) (Official)
Monday, Jan. 17 – Visual Effects Society (Nominations) (Official)

Big Winners

Drive My Car, rather than slowing down, seems to be keeping pace as the season rolls along. It continues to pick up award, but we’ll see as soon as the guilds start announcing just how much forward momentum the film has in its pursuit of a rare Best Picture nomination.
The Power of the Dog has been dominating the awards in the last week, much like in the preceding weeks. While it occasionally loses ground to Drive My Car, no other English-language film seems to be doing as well as it is.
Peter Dinklage continues to keep making nominations lists for Best Actor even when other actors in the race get bumped for him. It will be interesting to see where he goes with SAG when they announce later this week.
The Green Knight might not be picking up the kind of attention that The Power of the Dog is, but the film has done a smashing job of staying in the conversation with its numerous citations from critics groups. Whether or not it’s enough to carry it into any Oscar races remains to be seen.

Big Losers

Belfast might be picking up plenty of nominations, but its win chances keep bumping against other films. It cannot seem to overcome either Drive My Car or The Power of the Dog, which suggests the film may have reached its saturation point and may be bottoming out too early.
King Richard is in much the same position, but perhaps worse of one. Other than Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis, the film has been struggling to land on nominations lists, often coming in at the bottom of lists or completely excluded from them. It was thought to be on par with Belfast in terms of its Oscar trajectory, but it’s most definitely fading faster.
Cyrano isn’t having the kind of luck its star Peter Dinklage has. The film has all the elements to be a player in the craft categories and has picked up a handful of nominations here or there, but its late release is proving difficult to overcome when it comes to closing the enthusiasm gap.
