Here we look at the upcoming month’s offerings.

January 7, 2022

The 355

Premise: From IMDb: “When a top-secret weapon falls into mercenary hands, a wild card CIA agent joins forces with three international agents on a lethal mission to retrieve it, while staying a step ahead of a mysterious woman who’s tracking their every move”
Box Office Prospects: $35 M
Expectations: Poor. This film has been held back longer than it should have and its concept isn’t likely to liven up the January box office.
Oscar Prospects: None.

A Hero (Limited)

Premise: From IMDb: “Rahim is in prison because of a debt he was unable to repay. During a two-day leave, he tries to convince his creditor to withdraw his complaint against the payment of part of the sum. But things don’t go as planned .”
Box Office Prospects: $0.5 M
Expectations: Poor. Independent cinema has been hurt severely by the pandemic and I don’t see this film fixing that.
Oscar Prospects: Good. It’s one of the handful of foreign language films that could compete for a nomination, though a win is unlikely.

Scream

Premise: From IMDb: “A new installment of the ‘Scream’ horror franchise will follow a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes.”
Box Office Prospects: $85 M
Expectations: Uncertain. The franchise petered out after three films and it’s been far too many years to be generally competitive, but stranger things have happened.
Oscar Prospects: None.

The King’s Daughter

Premise: From IMDb: “King Louis XIV’s quest for immortality leads him to capture and steal a mermaid’s life force, a move that is further complicated by his illegitimate daughter’s discovery of the creature.”
Box Office Prospects: $25 M
Expectations: Poor. The film’s prospects weren’t high to begin with, but releasing in the doldrums of January isn’t the best move.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Redeeming Love

Premise: From IMDb: “Sold into prostitution as a child, Angel knows nothing but betrayal. Can her heart ever be mended? Based upon the novel by Francine Rivers.”
Box Office Prospects: $15 M
Expectations: Weak. The film never had a lot of box office prospects and releasing outside the Valentine’s Day window seems like a misstep even if the plot itself weren’t a warning sign.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Morbius

Premise: From IMDb: “Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead”
Box Office Prospects: $120 M
Expectations: Uncertain. On the one hand, Spider-Man‘s box office was excellent. On the other, Sony has struggled to get anything else to light up the box office.
Oscar Prospects: None.
