Here we look at the upcoming month’s offerings.

November 6, 2020

Let Him Go

Premise: From IMDb: “A retired sheriff and his wife, grieving over the death of their son, set out to find their only grandson.”
Box Office Prospects: $15 M
Expectations: Uncertain. It’s got a familiar lead and will play well in the midwest, so it could perform well where theaters are most likely to be open.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Freaky

Premise: From IMDb: “After swapping bodies with a deranged serial killer, a young girl in high school discovers she has less than 24 hours before the change becomes permanent.”
Box Office Prospects: $20 M
Expectations: Uncertain. If The New Mutants can make $22 million in a pandemic, this film can come close as well.
Oscar Prospects: None.

Ammonite (Limited)

Premise: From IMDb: “1840s England, acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning and a young woman sent to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever.”
Box Office Prospects: $1 M
Expectations: Uncertain. Indie cinema is just as injured by the pandemic and although this is already critically acclaimed, it won’t have a lot of opportunities to excel at the box office.
Oscar Prospects: Good. Early word is that Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan will be major Oscar players this year with the latter possibly finally winning something?

Mank (Limited)

Premise: From IMDb: “Follows screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’s tumultuous development of Orson Welles’ iconic masterpiece Citizen Kane (1941).”
Box Office Prospects: $0 M
Expectations: None. This film is released by Netflix, which means it will have no box office run at all.
Oscar Prospects: Good. Another major Oscar contender, this one taking us all the way back to the 1940s when the furor over Citizen Kane was front page news, unless the newspaper was owned by William Randolph Hearstโ€ฆ

Sound of Metal (Limited)

Premise: From IMDb: “A heavy-metal drummer’s life is thrown into freefall when he begins to lose his hearing.”
Box Office Prospects: $0.5 M
Expectations: Uncertain. Without strong reviews, the best this film can hope for is a sub-1-mil tally.
Oscar Prospects: Uncertain. It could be a Best Sound contender, but that’s about it.

The Croods: A New Age

Premise: From IMDb: “The prehistoric family the Croods are challenged by a rival family the Bettermans, who claim to be better and more evolved.”
Box Office Prospects: $25 M
Expectations: Uncertain. The pandemic may not give this film room to grow at the box office, but it could do Tenet business if families decide to go to the theater.
Oscar Prospects: Uncertain. The Academy doesn’t really love sequels, but there may not be a lot of options this year.
