Tonight, we have a quintet of updates with three new trailers and two new posters. Our new trailers are for 2010’s Country Strong and No Problem, and 2011’s Winnie the Pooh. The new posters are for 2010’s True Grit and 2011’s Gnomeo & Juliet.

WINNIE THE POOH

Plot Summary: The classic A.A. Milne stories of Winnie the Pooh return to the big screen after a 35-year absence.
Release Date: July 15, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: For fans of Pooh, this will make their millennium. For non-fans, it will represent a cute, if innocuous trailer that is destined to pull more kids to the theater than adults, even with those who remember the originals.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.

Oscar Chances: Never underestimate Disney, but a lot depends on the competition, which is sure to be stiff.

COUNTRY STRONG

Plot Summary: A popular country superstar has just been released from jail after a drunken driving offense. She must come to terms with her life and rebuild what she almost destroyed
Release Date: December 22, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C+
Commentary: A typical country music biopic with few original set pieces or plot devices on display. It will appeal to the right (country music loving) audience with the rest of the country a bit uninterested.
Rating: C
Commentary: The colors are almost enjoyable, but the way the lighting is played along the four characters and then how they are framed and overlapped make everything look off-kilter and uninspiring.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: While the film isn’t likely to be on Oscar’s radar for most awards, Gwyneth Paltrow is entering the super-crowded Best Actress field and may reprieve her lackluster post-Oscar career with a nomination.

NO PROBLEM

Plot Summary: Two petty criminals perform one last bank job and then another crime and another.
Release Date: December 10, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: D+
Commentary: Haphazard, poorly edited and with terrible sound quality, this is the kind of trailer that is bound to leave American audiences confused and irritated.
Rating: C-
Commentary: Like the trailer, but a little more pleasing to look at, the poster is so outrageous and befuddled that I can’t see anyone looking at it and writing this down as a film to see.
Trailer Link: Apple Trailers
Oscar Chances: None.

GNOMEO & JULIET, poster

Plot Summary: William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy re-written for warring families of garden gnomes.
Release Date: February 11, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
Gnomeo & Juliet
Rating: C+
Commentary: A silly little preview that may get kids giggling, but adults won’t be able to stop groaning at the horrendous tagline-pun in evidence.

TRUE GRIT, poster #2

Plot Summary: To avenge her father’s murder, a young orphan seeks out a legendary sheriff to help her track down his killer.
Release Date: December 22, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Previous Preview:
True Grit
Rating: C+
Commentary: I’m not going to give a letter grade bump to a poster that is nearly identical to the prior. A few minor changes, such as the light landscape at the bottom, some font size adjustments and coloration changes and the removal of a bullet hole with blood oozing out. It’s not much of an improvement.
