Five new trailers (The Eagle, Feed the Fish, Little Fockers, Rivers Wash Over Me and Yogi Bear) and three new posters (Blue Valentine, Jane Eyre and Kung Fu Panda 2) for us today.

THE EAGLE

Plot Summary: To avenge the loss of a treasured Roman symbol, a son must seek out his father and the fate of his 5,000-soldier garrison.
Release Date: February 25, 2011

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: Not a bad advertisement. It’s sure to bring in quite an audience. That it manages to look rather original despite the fact that it’s releasing early in the year rather than late. It usually means there’s something seriously wrong with the resultant picture that it won’t play well with critics.
Rating: B-
Commentary: Gritty, strong coloring and a decent image selection, this poster may not win awards, but it will win admirers.

Oscar Chances: Releasing so early in the year will be devastating for its Oscar chances, but the tech categories are the one place it could shine.

LITTLE FOCKERS, trailer #2

Plot Summary: The third film in the popular Meet the Parents trilogy brings the entire family back together to explore the joys of parenting.
Release Date: December 22, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: B-
Commentary: And so we come to another Focker family film for the holidays. The trailer shows some signs of amusement, but also seems to be showing signs of age.

RIVERS WASH OVER ME

Plot Summary: Forced to move from his urban life to rural Alabama, a young black writer tries to find and understand himself and his desires.
Release Date: TBD

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C+
Commentary: The quality of the trailer is horrendously low, which accounts for the lower grade here. There are a few interesting elements in the trailer that suggest a potentially thought-provoking film, but not enough information to be assured of that.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.

Oscar Chances: None.

FEED THE FISH

Plot Summary: While one man trains for the Polar Bear Plunge, his friend tries to write a book, but comes up empty of ideas. While in the cold outdoors, he must struggle to understand the locals while survive his own failures.
Release Date: TBD

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C+
Commentary: It doesn’t look like a comedy that has a lot of ideas going for it. The fish out of water concept has been done many times and this looks a teensy bit like Funny Farm but without the overboard humor or famed leading man.
Rating: None
Commentary: I don’t review placeholders.

Oscar Chances: None.

YOGI BEAR, trailer #3

Plot Summary: A live-action/cgi hybrid adaptation of the classic cartoon about a talking bear and his young cub cohort who steal picnic baskets from unsuspecting campers.
Release Date: December 17, 2010

Trailer

Poster

Rating: C-
Commentary: Three observations: Tom Cavanagh is no Jason Lee (Dave in the Alvin and the Chipmunks live-action adaptation); Dan Ackroyd is no Daws Butler (the original voice of Yogi Bear); and this film is stupefyingly low brow and humorless.

BLUE VALENTINE, poster #2

Plot Summary: They’re trying to save their failing marriage, but will two unhappy people be able to reconnect through their shared memories?
Release Date: December 31, 2010

Trailer

Poster

BlueValentine
Rating: B
Commentary: I like the colors of this poster much more than the garish pink edifice that graced the first poster. The image a little more sultry, which may help draw an audience. I don’t care much for the title design.

KUNG FU PANDA, poster #2

Plot Summary: Everyone’s favorite food-loving kung fu-fighting panda returns in his second big screen feature.
Release Date: May 26, 2011

Poster

Kung Fu Panda
Rating: C
Commentary: It’s a series that shares common background and title elements, but very little else. It’s not an aggressively bad design, but it’s not an exceptional one either.

JANE EYRE, poster

Plot Summary: The story of an impoverished misfit longing for a wealthy young man she cannot possess.
Release Date: March 11, 2011

Rating: D
Commentary: A plain, boring poster for a movie that doesn’t look much more exciting.
