Runner-Up Predictions
- Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (WL R) [New] (PP O) (TB O)
- Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (TL R) [New]

Wesley Lovell: The entire season has been building towards a Pinocchio win and the film has picked up almost every significant award out there, so it should win without contest. Watch out though for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. It’s the only other animated feature to win prizes this season and has surprised in other races, so it could surprise here.
Peter J. Patrick: Guillermo de Toro’s Pinocchio is such a runaway favorite that nothing is going to beat it.
Tripp Burton: No revised predictions or commentary provided.
Thomas La Tourrette: Nothing will stop Pinocchio from winning. It has over half the precursors, with wins by PGA, DGA, BAFTA, and especially the Annies cementing its frontrunner status. It is difficult to imagine any other name being called out on Oscar night. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On and Turning Red each won a few precursors, but I think if anything could upset Pinocchio it would be Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. That wonโt happen so Pinocchio will be the easy winner.
Best Animated Short Film
Winner Predictions
- The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse (WL O) (PP R) [New] (TB O) (TL O)
- The Flying Sailor
- Ice Merchants
- My Year of Dicks
- An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It
Runner-Up Predictions
- Ice Merchants (PP R) [New] (TB O)
- My Year of Dicks (TL R) [New]
- An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It (WL O)
(color and symbol key at bottom of page)
Wesley Lovell: The most acclaimed animated short of the year appears to be The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. It’s lengthy and beautifully animated. It’s hard to say that any other short stands a chance, but My Hear of Dicks and An Ostrich Told Me… are the most likely contenders.
Peter J. Patrick: The charming The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse is the likely winner here with The Ice Merchants its strongest competition.
Tripp Burton: No revised predictions or commentary provided.
Thomas La Tourrette: These were definitely an odd group, watchable but not outstanding. The likely winner is The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. It is a sweet but overly sentimental tale and the most kid friendly of the bunch. It was pretty to watch, but really not that deep. The longest film often wins which is another reason why it might win. The more personal My Year of Dicks follows a girl wanting to lose her virginity and the trials and tribulations she goes through to achieve that goal. A variety of animation styles makes this a possible upset winner. Ice Merchants was beautifully told in limited color scheme and reliant on noises, but the ending left me not quite fulfilled. The Flying Sailor shows the effect of an explosion on one sailor who is blown through the air. Interesting, but, when it was over, I just did not know what to make of it. An Ostrich Told Meโฆ is an amusing tale of a cubicle worker who starts to figure out that the world is not what it seems. As the only stop motion film in the bunch it could also pull an upset. Still, I expect The Boy, the Moleโฆ to win.
