Wesley Lovell: This year, few races have been clarified more with the SAG winners than in the Best Supporting Actress race. With Ruth Negga out of the race and Kirsten Dunst not really gaining traction, Ariana DeBose cruised to victory at SAG and that seems like the most likely Oscar result as well. Watch out for Aunjanue Ellis and Dunst as potential spoilers.
Peter J. Patrick: I’m going to go against the grain here and predicting a win for Kirst Dunst over precursor favorite Ariana DeBose with Judi Dench a possible surprise winner for what will most likely be her last shot at winning a second Oscar.
Tripp Burton: It seems more and more like Ariana DeBose is becoming the most locked-in acting winner come Oscar night. West Side Story is picking up steam, she has been charming on the circuit, and seems destined for that stage.
Thomas La Tourrette: This is one of the few categories that has felt set from the start. Even though she has not truly dominated the precursors, Ariana DeBose of West Side Story has the most wins and has been the front runner the entire time. Wins from the Golden Globes and especially SAG have cemented her spot. So, 60 years after Rita Moreno won for playing Anita, DeBose will win for her Anita. She was fiery and memorably, made it her own, and she deserves to win. The only person who feels like she could upset would be Kirsten Dunst as the alcoholic wife in The Power of the Dog. She has been in movies for a long time and surely deserved a nomination before this one, but at least she finally got one. Unfortunately for her, unless Power of the Dog sweeps everything, I do not think she stands a chance of winning. Aunjanue Ellis in King Richard and Judi Dench in Belfast have limited screen time though they both made the most of it. I just do not see them winning. Nor Jessie Buckley, who seemed a surprise nominee. Ariana DeBose should easily win.
