Welcome to The Morning After, where I share with you what movies I’ve seen over the past week. Below, you will find short reviews of those movies along with a star rating. Full length reviews may come at a later date.
So, here is what I watched this past week:
Big Hero 6
When you think about the origins of Big Hero 6, the thought of Disney’s dominance not only over animation, but of the super hero genre itself, is almost frightening. Yet, even though they can’t make a non-hero live-action film worth anything, there are two genres they’ve excelled in to date and the successful blend of these two genres is the latest non-Princess film from Disney Animation.
Hiro (voiced by Ryan Potter) is an inventive young thirteen-year-old whose competitive robot fighting gets him in serious trouble. After his older brother convinces him to apply to university where they can work side-by-side, an unfortunate accident leads Hiro on an adventure to avenge his brother and potential mentor against a kabuki mask-wearing thief whose machinations remain under wraps until the film’s middle third.
There’s little to quibble about regarding Disney’s animation. Japanese and American styles merge to create a compelling near-future society. Turning the Golden Gate Bridge into the Golden Torii Bridge is just one of the interesting design choices that dot the city of San Fransokyo. The film focuses heavily on the idea that education is a laudatory career choice and keeping the scientific community playful makes the concept appealing to youngsters wanting to find a new inspiration for their futures. The plot takes an obvious turn in the middle third, but it culminates in a traditionally emotional journey for our protagonist and the audience in tandem.
