Press Release: Eric Bogosian to Narrate “Listen Up Philip”
ERIC BOGOSIAN TO NARRATE ALEX ROSS PERRYโS โLISTEN UP PHILIPโ
โListen Up Philipโ Starring Jason Schwartzman, Elisabeth Moss, Jonathan Pryce and Krysten Ritter To World Premiere At The 2014 Sundance Film Festival
(New York, NY) December 16th, 2013 โ Eric Bogosian has signed on to narrate Alex Ross Perryโs โListen Up Philipโ which will have its world premiere at the upcoming 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
Following up his critically acclaimed “The Color Wheel”, Alex Ross Perry scripts a complex, intimate and highly idiosyncratic comedy filled with New Yorkers living their lives somewhere between individuality and isolation. Jason Schwartzman leads an impressive cast including Elisabeth Moss, Jonathan Pryce and Krysten Ritter, balancing Perryโs quick-witted dialogue and their charactersโ painful, personal truths. The film switches perspectives as seasons and attitudes change, offering a literary look into the lives of these individuals and the triumph of reality over the human spirit.
โListen Up Philipโ was produced by Katie Stern & Joshua Blum from Washington Square Films (the companyโs follow-up film to the acclaimed โAll Is Lostโ) and Toby Halbrooks, James M. Johnston & David Lowery from Sailor Bear (the team behind last yearโs Sundance hit โAinโt Them Bodies Saintsโ). John Slossโ Cinetic Media will be handling the domestic sale of the film.
โEver since I first saw โThe Magnificent Ambersonsโ, I have dreamt of directing a film with a narrator. Throughout the process of making โListen Up Philipโ, probably the question I got asked the most was ‘who is going to narrate it?’ I knew what kind of diction I needed: a New York voice for my New York movie. Intelligent, cynical, nonjudgmental. Eric Bogosian is that voice and hearing him read the words finally made the film click for me in the way I always imagined itโ, said director Alex Ross Perry.
โAlexโs movie is bitter, honest and very funny. I felt right at home in the world he createdโ, said Eric Bogosian.
Eric Bogosian is best known as a playwright, novelist and actor. He is currently completing a non-fiction book documenting โNemesisโ, a conspiracy that targeted and assassinated Turkish leaders responsible for the Armenian genocide. (To be published by Little, Brown in 2015)
Eric Bogosian wrote and starred in the play, โTalk Radioโ (NYSF โ 1987; Broadway with Liev Schreiber- 2007). For this work he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and the Tony award. For his film adaptation of the play, Bogosian received the Berlin Film Festival โSilver Bear.โ His six solo performances Off-Broadway between 1980 and 2000, (including โDrinking in Americaโ, โSex, Drugs, Rock & Rollโ and โWake Up and Smell the Coffeeโ) received three Obie awards. In addition to โTalk Radioโ, Bogosian has written a number of full-length plays including โsubUrbiaโ (LCT, Second Stage, also adapted to film), โGrillerโ (Goodman), โRed Angelโ (Williamstown Theater Festival), โHumpty Dumptyโ (The McCarter), 1+1 (New York Stage and Film). He is also the author of three novels, โMallโ, โWasted Beautyโ and โPerforated Heartโ and a novella, โNotes from Underground.โ
As an actor, Bogosian has appeared in numerous films and television programs, starring in Robert Altmanโs โThe Caine Mutiny Court Martialโ, Oliver Stoneโs โTalk Radioโ, as Travis Dane in โUnder Siege IIโ, as Eddie Nash in โWonderlandโ and as Captain Danny Ross in sixty episodes of โLaw & Order: CI.โ In 2010, he starred on Broadway in โTime Stands Stillโ with Laura Linney.
In January 2013, Theater Communications Group will publish the full collection of Bogosianโs monologues, titled โ100 (monologues).โ Bogosian lives in New York with his wife, director Jo Bonney.

Press Release: American Zoetrope Obtains Rights to “Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father”
New York, NY (December 16, 2013) – American Zoetrope announced today that it has acquired the motion picture rights for Alysia Abbottโs critically acclaimed memoir, FAIRYLAND: A Memoir of My Father (W. W. Norton & Company). Sofia Coppola (LOST IN TRANSLATION, THE BLING RING) and Roman Coppola (THE DARJEELING LIMITED, MOONRISE KINGDOM) will produce the film. Ms. Coppola and Andrew Durham will co-write the screenplay. Mr. Durham is a photographer who collaborates regularly with Ms. Coppola.
Praised by Alexandra Styron in The New York Times as โa daughter’s compassionate, clear-eyed reckoning with the truths that defined her singular girlhood,โ FAIRYLAND is a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of San Franciscoโs vibrant cultural scene in the 1970s and โ80s, both before and after the AIDS epidemic, a crisis that would later claim the life of Abbott’s father, Steve Abbott, a widowed poet and gay activist.
โI love the book Fairyland; itโs a sweet and unique love story of a girl and her dad, both growing up together in 1970’s San Francisco. I think it will make an engaging and touching movie on a subject I’ve never seen before,โ said Ms. Coppola.
Alysia Abbott said, โIโm delighted that Sofia Coppola and Zoetrope are going to create the film version of Fairyland. Sofiaโs understanding of the feminine perspective and the artistic vision that she shares with Andrew Durham make them ideal partners to make this movie. I could not be happier.โ
Published by W. W. Norton & Company in June, FAIRYLAND was featured on NPR’s โFresh Air,โ and was further extolled in The New Yorker as a memoir that โdoubles as a portrait of a city and a community at a crucial point in history… [Abbott] remembers playing dress-up with her fatherโs flamboyant friends, learning about sex and gender without a mother, being immersed in art and creativity, and, finally, watching as the AIDS epidemic decimated the life she knew.โ
The author was represented by Brandy Rivers at The Gersh Agency, David Davoli of Davoli Law Firm, and David Patterson at Foundry Literary + Media. Zoetrope was represented by ICM Partners and attorneys Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof + Fishman.

APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

Written and Directed by: Desiree Akhavan
Cast: Desiree Akhavan, Rebecca Henderson, Halley Feiffer, Scott Adsit, Anh Duong, Arian Moayed
For Shirin (Desiree Akhavan), being part of a perfect Persian family isnโt easy. Acceptance eludes her from all sides: her family doesnโt know sheโs bisexual, and her ex-girlfriend, Maxine (Rebecca Henderson), canโt understand why she doesnโt tell them. Even the six-year-old boys in her moviemaking class are too ADD to focus on her for more than a second. Following a family announcement of her brotherโs betrothal to a parentally approved Iranian prize catch, Shirin embarks on a private rebellion involving a series of pansexual escapades, while trying to decipher what went wrong with Maxine.
Written and directed by Akhavan, APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR introduces a gray area to the coming-out narrative; in an Iranian-American family, sharing information about oneโs sexuality isnโt always the right approach to liberation. With her priceless deadpan delivery, Akhavanโs portrayal of Shirin is the filmโs true revelationโa woman caught between self-doubt and self-possession, trapped in a web of family mores and societal expectations, with all their accompanyingโand often hilariousโcomplexities.

THE BATTERED BASTARDS OF BASEBALL
(Acquisition Title / Submarine)
Section: Documentary Premieres
Directed by: Chapman Way, Maclain Way
Featuring: Kurt Russell, Todd Field, Louise Russell, Jim Bouton, Jack Faust, Rob Nelson, Frank Peters
THE BATTERED BASTARDS OF BASEBALL is one of baseballโs last great, unheralded true stories. In 1973, Hollywood veteran Bing Russell (best known for playing Deputy Clem on โBonanzaโ) created the only independent baseball team in America at the time, the legendary Portland Mavericks. Bing operated without a Major League affiliation while playing in a city that was considered a wasteland for professional baseball. Tryouts for the Mavericks, which were open to the public, were filled with hopefuls who arrived in droves from every state in America, many of whom had been rejected by organized baseball.
Skeptics agreed it would never work. But Bingโs Mavericks generated unprecedented success: they shattered attendance records, signed Kurt Russell โ Bingโs son โ as a player and team Vice President, produced the most successful batboy in baseball (future Oscarยฎ nominated filmmaker Todd Field), re-launched the controversial career of Jim Bouton, hired the first female general manager in Baseball, and inspired one of Americaโs beloved bubblegums โ Big League Chew.
THE BATTERED BASTARDS OF BASEBALL is as much about the independent spirit as it is about baseball. The Mavericksโ in your face attitude was contagious to fans, and during their short reign, they โ and Bing Russell โ basically held up their middle finger to the sports establishment and said we’re playing this game on our terms, not yours. They were the real life Bad News Bears.

HELLION
(Acquisition Title / UTA)
Section: U.S. Dramatic Competition
Written and Directed by: Kat Candler
Cast: Aaron Paul, Juliette Lewis, Josh Wiggins, Deke Garner, Jonny Mars
Writer/director Kat Candler’s HELLION paints the powerful portrait of a family on the brink of dissolution set against the haunting backdrop of the refineries of Southeast Texas.
Obsessed with heavy metal, dirt bike racing and partaking in the occasional act of vandalism with his band of delinquents, the behavior of 13-year-old Jacob Wilson (Josh Wiggins in his feature film debut) has begun to raise concerns around town, especially when it starts to involve his younger brother Wes (newcomer Deke Garner). While the boysโ father Hollis (two-time Emmy Award-winner Aaron Paul) loves his sons, he is still reeling from the loss of their mother, spending more time drowning his sorrows at the local bar and working on his damaged beach house than being an active parent.
When the local authorities catch wind of the increasingly volatile situation, Wes is taken into custody by his Aunt Pam (Academy Award nominee Juliette Lewis), leaving Jacob and Hollis to fend for themselves. In Wesโ absence, Jacob becomes increasingly obsessed with two things: winning a local motocross championship and getting his brother back.
With a scorching central performance by Wiggins and heart-wrenchingly raw turns by Paul and Lewis, HELLION is impossible to shake. Executive Produced by Jeff Nichols (MUD) and Sarah Green (THE TREE OF LIFE).

Directed by: David Zellner
Written by: David Zellner, Nathan Zellner
Cast: Rinko Kikuchi
A psychological adventure from the Zellner Brothers, KUMIKO THE TREASURE HUNTER tells the haunting and strangely funny story of a young Japanese woman set on fulfilling the wildest of dreams.
In a hectic city of 35 million, Kumiko (Academy Award nominee Rinko Kikuchi) feels devastatingly alone. Trapped in isolating psychological torment, Kumiko โa meek twenty-something struggling to make it on her own in Tokyoโlives in constant resentment of her dead-end job and demeaning boss, her more successful and attractive peers, and her relentlessly nagging mother. But her spirits lift when, in a fictional American film, she observes a man bury a satchel of money in the wintry Midwestern wilderness. Though only witnessed on a staticky VHS tape, she becomes convinced that the treasure is real and merely awaiting discovery by a courageous dreamer like herself.
With little more than a self-made treasure map, Kumiko sets off on an epic, unpredictable journey across the Pacific and through the icy plains of Minnesota to unearth her mythical fortune.

LISTEN UP PHILIP
(Acquisition Title / Cinetic)
Section: NEXT
Written and Directed by: Alex Ross Perry
Cast: Jason Schwartzman, Elisabeth Moss, Jonathan Pryce, Krysten Ritter, Josephine de La Baume
Anger rages in Philip (Jason Schwartzman) as he awaits the publication of his sure-to-succeed second novel. He feels pushed out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise, a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley, and his own indifference to promoting the novel. When Philipโs idol Ike Zimmerman offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, he finally gets the peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subjectโhimself.
Following up his critically-acclaimed THE COLOR WHEEL, Alex Ross Perry scripts a complex, intimate and highly idiosyncratic comedy filled with New Yorkers living their lives somewhere between individuality and isolation. Schwartzman leads an impressive cast including Elisabeth Moss, Krysten Ritter and Jonathan Pryce, balancing Perryโs quick-witted dialogue and their charactersโ painful, personal truths. With narration by Eric Bogosian, we switch perspectives as seasons and attitudes change, offering a literary look into the lives of these individuals and the triumph of reality over the human spirit.
LISTEN UP PHILIP was produced by Washington Square Films (the companyโs follow-up film to the acclaimed ALL IS LOST) and Sailor Bear Productions, the team behind last yearโs Sundance hit AINโT THEM BODIES SAINTS.
