   Just checked IMDB and The Tourist has been classified as a DRAMA/THRILLER – so how could it be nominated in the COMEDY/MUSICAL category?

   I’m betting The Tourist, Burlesque and Alice in Wonderland also score nods at the Razzies – which will make the HFPA look really stupid!

      The HFPA isn’t concerned about looking stupid. I don’t understand how Tourist is classified comedy, but more than likely Tourist appeared on the list before anyone saw it. They probably haven’t even seen it.

      And when there are great comedies this year including Scott Pilgrim and Easy A, it’s rather disappointing. And considering Love and Other Drugs qualified, but didn’t get a nomination is even more surprising. Then there’s the comedy How Do You Know from James L. Brooks. They could even have gone for Valentine’s Day.

         I would imagine The Tourist was shown to the HFPA membership. Another way of looking at it is that that didn’t take it seriously, considered it a black comedy as opposed to a typical thriller.

         The Globes love Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, sure, but they also love director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck whose Lives of Others is a previous GG winner.

         Also, it was filmed in Europe so the European contingent of the HFPA may feel connected to it as the Boston and Chicago film critics are often more connected to films made in their cities than the general public.

         I think these comedy nods, as ridiculous as they are, say more about the general contempt for disappointing comedies such as Love & Other Drugs and How Do You Know than they do for what is actually nominated.

   The globes once again went for star power – anything to get viewers to tune it to the telecast and give the HFPA more money.

   The reviews for Alice in Wonderland, The Tourist and Burlesque have been dreadful but there they sit with multiple nominations including Best Picture!

   Just like last year when the ridiculous Hangover and Sherlock Holmes scored Globes – it’s best to disregard the Comedy/Musical section – EXCEPT for the excellent “Kids are all right”

   Fingers crossed the overrated Social Network leaves empty handed though!

   From everything I’ve read online today, the Tourist was nom’ed with the hopes of bringing big star power to the telecast. Interesting theory considering that that same big star power sure as heck didn’t bring anyone to the box office to see the film this past weekend. :o) For me, the Best Musical or Comedy field this year really stinks. Only one film truly deserves to be on that list (Kids are All Right). Just weird.

   BTW, I’m really happy for Jeremy Renner’s nomination. I’ve been a big fan of his for a while now since he’s a “local boy” from Modesto, near where I live. I have seen a lot of his screen performances (most of which are as good as they are obscure). I loved his performance in The Town, but you guys haven’t had his name on any of your prediction lists for Best Supporting Actor. I remember back in early September I left a comment about it. You said he wasn’t really being mentioned by critics as a potential nominee, but that seemed contrary to everything I’ve been reading online leading up to the awards season. Regardless, I am SUPER happy to see his name on the GG nom list, and I’m really hoping it’ll lead into another Oscar nom as well. Just like last year, it’s not his turn yet, but he’s a cool guy with huge talent.

   You guys are and for years have been one of my favorite sites in the months leading up to all the big awards shows. Thanks!!!

      I see Jeremy Renner and Sam Rockwell duking it out for he fifth slot for Supporting Actor behind Bale, rush, Ruffalo and Gafield. I give Rockwell a slight edge because he’s ever been nominated before and Renner has a Best Actor nod under his belt from last year. A SAG nod would improve his chances.

      Renner seems to have had more staying power than I expected. If he shows up at SAG, he becomes a threat for a nomination, though you can probably not expect a win.

   I don’t get the Tourist mentions, especially how despised it was. And yet That and Alice in Wonderland both made it in over Love and Other Drugs…I may not love Love and Other Drugs, but it was a far better film than Alice in Wonderland. And the double nod for Johnny Depp is sickening. He’s not an interesting actor anymore Get over him.

      I’m with you, I can’t understand how such a bad film could be nominated in best film (comedy), and why their permormances (Johnny and angelina) must deserve another for best actor/actres…

         The simplest explanation is that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is first and foremost NOT a critics group. They are a group of foreign press correspondents, which means they cover Hollywood for their respective outlets. So, not being critics, their tastes vary wildly. In addition, they have long had the reputation of Star Whores, always wanting the most beautiful and popular stars to come to their gala and walk their red carpet and show up on their annual telecast, the second most popular film awards telecast after the Oscars.

   Yeah, I’m surprised that “The Tourist” got nominated for actor and actress, despite the star power. It got bad reviews and is not doing particularly well at the box-office. I can understand Depp’s nod for “Alice in Wonderland,” though, since it’s a wacky performance in a huge box-office hit.
