Taraji P. Henson & Sarah Jessica Parker announced the nominees this morning in two batches. The first batch, carried live on national television, covered all of the lead acting category along with Best Director and Best Motion Picture Drama. The rest were announced several minutes later, all streamed. Promising Young Woman did tremendously well with nominations for Picture, Actress, and most amazingly, Director. That’s a tremendous feat for a film that seems to have been very divisively received. Even more prominent is the three women nominated in Director, which is a huge achievement, one that the similar Satellite Awards ignored. When Parker came back, she announced the Comedy/Musical Picture, Original Score, and Supporting Actor categories. Henson came back to announce the rest several minutes later, extending the morning’s coverage excessively.

Other prominent issues, Leslie Odom Jr. and Regina King were the only nominees this morning for One Night in Miami, which is rather strange. Then again, Regina King is a multi-Golden Globe nominee and having an actor nominated in Director makes quite a bit of sense considering Globes history. Mank managed to hold on and secure several nominations in spite of a rocky launch and divide responses from critics. Other items of note: late breaking The Mauritanian and Judas and the Black Messiah both earned recognition, but were suspiciously absent from non-acting/song categories. Oscar frontrunner Nomadland earned nominations in all the categories one would expect as di Promising Young Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Mank. The Father and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm also did pretty well. Chadwick Boseman did not pick up that double-nomination many expected, so he may just be the front runner in the Drama Actor category.
