Vice was today’s big winner taking three acting nominations and bringing in six total. The Favourite, Green Book, and A Star Is Born proved that they are still major players while BlacKkKlansman and Black Panther scored well enough to be considered major threats, as did If Beale Street Could Talk and Roma. Injured enormously here were First Man, once thought to be the biggest Oscar contender of the year; Mary Queen of Scots, which seemed like the kind of movie Globe voters love; Widows managed to peter out quickly in the awards race without a single mention today; and First Reformed also took a hit without a single nomination, not even in screenplay, which seems an Oscar-given.

Films that could have used the boost include Welcome to Marwen whose star Steve Carell, didn’t even pick up a nomination and these voters love him; On the Basis of Sex star Felicity Jones could also have used a bump; and Vox Lux was shut out even for the ever popular Natalie Portman. Then there are people who got a surprising nod here including Elsie Fisher for Eighth Grade, Willem Dafoe for At Eternity’s Gate (a much needed bump); Claire Foy for First Man; and John David Washington for BlacKkKlansman.
