Can history repeat itself at the Oscars, these nominations might suggest it’s possible. A new adaptation of the classic novel All Quiet on the Western Front crushed its competitors to come up ahead in the BAFTA nominations. Proving that American films weren’t all they were cracked up to be, Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick had anemic tallies while a lot of the frontrunners made it through. Overall, there were just enough surprises to be interesting while also not being instructive since Oscar voting has already ended. That means that if All Quiet on the Western Front hadn’t surged enough in time, these nominations aren’t a reflection, but an afterthought.
