A traditional slate of longlist submissions this year with some interesting things to say about what can make it all the way to the Oscars and won’t most likely won’t. A lot of what we’ve been talking about so far is evident on these lists while some other narratives that have been developing throughout precursor season seem to have reached a dead end. Drive My Car doesn’t make the finalist list for Best Film, but shows up in Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Don’t Look Up had an amazing day suggesting it’s on stronger footing than we initially thought. The same is true of House of Gucci, though No Time to Die‘s success is likely a house effect of the pro-British group. The fantasy of a The Green Knight emergence was short-lived as it comes up with a scant two citations, and not in categories once thought it’s most plausible.
Some other observations: Nightmare Alley takes a big hit. Nicolas Cage’s hope of his first nomination in years have been dashed. In Best Supporting Actor, RObin de Jesus, Colman Domingo, Jason Isaacs, and Jeffrey Wright were losers. In Supporting Actress, it seems like Cate Blanchett got in for a different film than expected while Marlee Matlin was snubbed. Beyond that, I’ll have to take time to pore over these results to see if there’s anything else alarming to watch out for.
