The Grammys have never been able to lay claim to being Oscar harbingers thanks to their much earlier eligibility period that overlaps the Oscars eligibility period by three months. However, this year’s slate is even less indicative of the potential for the Oscars.
First, toss everything in Compilation Soundtrack and Music Film as they have no Oscar correlation. Music Film is similar to Documentary Feature as it features some of the same films, but the potential for overlap here seems non-existent this year. In the Score Sound track category, toss the two TV entries and Mary Poppins Returns. That leaves only Avengers and Lion King, the latter of which would be too derivative to be eligible for the Academy under mos circumstances. For Song, three more of the nominees are from last year with only “Spirit” from The Lion King and “The Ballad of the Lonesome Cowboy” from Toy Story 4 as contenders. Both could actually be in play. The latter is certainly eligible, but I haven’t seen The Lion King to know if “Spirit” is. If the song is either feature during the film or is the first musical queue of the end credits, it would be eligible. Otherwise, it’s not. We’ll know more when the Academy releases their eligibility list in the near future.
