While it was expected for highly technical films, films with lots of actors, and period films to pull out big numbers, Promising Young Woman stands out with thirteen mentions and only one of those is in Best British Film. That it figures in several categories it was never expected to contend in (Production Design for example) shows that clearly the film has resonated with British voters. Other prominent films include Saint Maud, The Dig, Ammonite, and The Mauritanian among films that weren’t entirely expected to do well. Films like Minari and Nomadland do decently well, but not outstanding.
