Precursor: 5th Hollywood Critics Nominations (2021)

With a full slate of categories, these numbers look more akin to the numbers the Oscars put up. That may or may not be the group’s intention, but as one of the only groups that had given out prizes separately for male and female directors, that they got rid of that this year is disappointing. The results are uniformly interesting, with Last Night in Soho outperforming expectations (which were nil) and with the likes of West Side Story and The Power of the Dog not doing nearly as well as they could have. Dune might well be the nomination leader with the Oscars come out, though this list barely acknowledges Nightmare Alley, which could be more of a contender than this group lets on.
