There isn’t a lot to see here. Had these been announced prior to the SAG awards as originally planned, they would have seemed oddball. The CODA choice will now be heralded as prophetic, but will it translate into an Oscar win? This group doesn’t have that level of prognosticative capability and with their slew of categories and large number of honorary awards, it’s hard to see them as trendsetters. CODA‘s win also shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise considering it was tied for the second-most nominated film of the year while Oscar frontrunner The Power of the Dog did poorly.
