There are two things we always note with awards from the London Critics. The first is that their release windows vary slightly from the US in most case (or drastically in some others). Further, they have their own British/Irish slate of categories, which often bolsters the chances of those productions and the home territory advantage can also homegrown films like Belfast, The Lost Daughter and Th Souvenir Part II. Strangely, Belfast didn’t benefit much from that distinction this year than the other two titles did, which makes for an interesting case about the film’s diminishing chances in the wake of the emergent dominance of The Power of the Dog, which easily topped the nomination count with a margin wider than the one niche nomination it received for British cast member Benedict Cumberbatch.
