Precursor: 31st Gotham Awards Nominations (2021)

The Gotham Awards announce earlier and earlier every year and for little reason. Sure, they get the drop on other groups, but their selections are often so far out of the mainstream that they don’t generally translate into Oscar nominations or even other precursor consideration. This is also only one of two groups that I’m familiar with who’ve announced they were going with genderless performance categories. I can’t say it inspires much optimism so far. What benefits from these nominations, Passing and The Lost Daughter. What doesn’t benefit, CODA and Mass. Little else was in competition for Oscars this year, so who knows just how predictive these will ultimately be.
