Precursor: 29th Screen Actors Guild Nominations (2022)

Two powerhouse ensembles dominated the nominations with The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once both claiming five nominations. Banshees is also one of the smallest ensembles ever nominated for that award. Tom Cruise and Hugh Jackman, both popular actors, took huge hits with this announcement as they were both competing for nominations while Adam Sandler squeezed in ahead of either. Paul Mescal and Jeremy Pope could have used nominations to springboard to the Oscar race, but both came up lacking. In Best Actress, the big omission is Michelle Williams. The guild obvious saw The Fabelmans, nominating it in the top category, but Williams going for lead when she should be in support likely hurt her chances here and may do her in at the Oscars. Ana de Armas and Danielle Deadwyler both got major boosts to their chances while Margot Robbie and Olivia Colman didn’t make it in. Paul Dano made it in and is boosted by this nomination, but Brian Tyree Henry, Ben Whishaw, Brad Pitt, Judd Hirsch, and Mark Rylance all failed possibly dooming their candidacies. Finally, in Best Supporting Actress, Stephanie Hsu makes a huge comeback after being too often absent from a lot of precursors. Angela Bassett also placed prominently bolstering her chances at the Oscars as did Hong Chau, but missing the list hurts Carey Mulligan, Dolly De Leon, Janelle Monáe, and Keke Palmer.
