What a bizarre set of nominees. Some of the expected ones showed up, but several did not. The Power of the Dog earned three nominations for its ensemble, but then none for the cast as a whole. That’s probably the most ludicrous change here. This does bolster Don’t Look Up to a minor extent. It got a cast nomination, but no individual actors were cited. Perhaps this is reminiscent of Bobby, which got a nomination because of its massive, impressive cast, but then failed at the Oscars because no one actually liked the film. The lack of other nominations certainly hurts the film’s chances.

The most injured by this are Licorice Pizza (excepting Bradley Cooper), Drive My Car, and The Power of the Dog, though it bolsters CODA, and House of Gucci. As to individual actors? Peter Dinklage takes the most damage, though Nicolas Cage is also hurt by these, but Javier Bardem has to be energized by his selection. In Best Actress, Kristen Stewart took a major hit while Jennifer Hudson’s chances have been reinvigorated. Penelope Cruz, Alana Haim, and Emilia Jones could have used the love, though, as could have Rachel Zegler. For Best Supporting Actor, Affleck picks up momentum while Ciaran Hinds loses a lot of it. The same is true for J.K. Simmons, but Cooper and Jared Leto have to like the mentions. In support, this likely means the end of the road for Rita Moreno. If the incredibly popular actress couldn’t make the cut with this group, the Academy’s going to be even more challenging. That said, Aunjanue Ellis lost momentum while Cate Blanchett and Caitriona Balfe picked up quite a bit. Jessie Buckley, Ann Dowd, and Marlee Matlin may also have reached the end of their campaigns.
