Cue accusations of racism. 13th, Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed documentary isn’t nominated. Those accusations may or may not be accurate, but it seems highly suspicious that a film so acclaimed would be ignored in favor of five documentaries, only two of which are familiar outside of film critics (The Eagle Huntress, O.J.: Made in America) and one of those (The Eagle Huntress) only barely so.
This will give each of these titles a better shot at an Oscar nomination, but the PGA slate is often minimally-connected to the eventual Oscar nominees. My suspicion is that Dancer and Tower are the most vulnerable here, but I could imagine only one of these O.J. or The Eagle Huntress making it onto the Oscar slate.
