It was a good morning for A Star Is Born and BlacKkKlansman. Apart from that, the nominations are almost as notable for their exclusions than their inclusions.
No nominations at all for If Beale Street Could Talk (Regina King or cast), Roma (Yalitza Aparicio cast), First Man (Claire Foy), First Reformed (Ethan Hawke), At Eternity’s Gate (Willem Dafoe), Hereditary (Toni Collette), Destroyer (Nicole Kidman), Boy Erased (Nicole Kidman), Support the Girls (Regina Hall), or Eighth Grade (Elsie Fisher).
Surprise nominations for Bohemian Rhapsody in cast, John David Washington in Actor, Margot Robbie and Emily Blunt in Supporting Actress.
Films that got nominations, but not the ones expected. Vice didn’t pick up cast or Sam Rockwell in Supporting Actor, no Green Book or The Favourite in cast, and no Saoirse Ronan in Actress.
What does this mean for the Oscars? Not necessarily much. If Beale Street Could Talk probably screened too late, The Favourite and Green Book were probably most injured by the cast exclusions, though both may have been perceived as too small for consideration compared to the massive ensembles in involved in all the other nominees except A Star Is Born.
Vice on the other hand does take a hit for its lack of cast inclusion. That cast was formidable and either it was screened too late or the subject matter turned a lot of voters off. Of course, the SAG nominating committee might have been sending a message with their minority-heavy selections in that category.
Those who probably have had their Oscar nomination dreams dashed by these nominations are Nicole Kidman, Toni Collette, Elsie Fisher, and Regina Hall. Ethan Hawke, Claire Foy, and Willem Dafoe didn’t have any favors done for them with these nominations, but they could still hang on.
