After a year filled with heavily-praised films directed by women, the Satellite Awards have managed to scrape together a list of four white male directors, one woman director, and one Korean-American director. No Black men or women. For a year that should have delivered a more diverse slate, this is a rather antiquated one. This is showcased in the love showered on Mank which was pretty much a stuffy old white guy kind of film. Sure, it’s nice that One Night in Miami, Minari, and Nomadland did as well as they did, but films like Promising Young Woman, barely acknowledged here, and Never Rarely Sometimes Always and First Cow, both completely ignored, it would seem that the Satellites are stuck in the dark ages. We’ll see how much better the DGA and Globes do when they announce. This group, even when presented extra time to view films, still managed to feel a bit out of touch.
