Similar in structure and composition to the far more famous Golden Globes, the Satellite Awards have been around long enough to give us an idea of how prognosticative they can be. While their history of predicting the Oscars is mediocre, part of that can be attributed to their incredibly early announcements (preceding almost every other precursor group). That said, their list doesn’t appear to be too far off of conventional wisdom this year.

Doing better than expected: Black Panther. This was a film that some thought would struggle for Oscar recognition in Best Picture and Cinematography. It managed to pull in seven nominations, which is pretty hefty considering only three films received more citations.

Doing worse than expected: Mary Queen of Scots has the makings of a popular choice for Oscar voters, considering its subject matter and period. The film managed a paltry three nominations, including Best Picture, but missed out on an expected citation for star Saoirse Ronan.

Doing about as expected: Everyone else. A Star Is Born led while The Favourite, Roma, BlacKkKlansman, First Man, and If Beale Street Could Talk followed closely behind. Green Book picked up all the needed nominations, but was sparsely recognized. Where more could it have been nominated, though?
