The nominees have just been announced. When the IPA first broke away from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (they put on the Golden Globes for those who don’t know), the International Press Academy was concerned over the forced populism the Globes engendered each year by trying to name the biggest stars possible regardless of quality. The originally started out dividing all of the acting categories (including support) into Drama and Comedy/Musical. They eventually shifted the supporting awards back to singular categories and now they’ve done the same with all of their awards. Instead, they’ve picked ten nominees in most of the major categories.

and try as they might by picking movies like The Guard and Tyrannosaur, they managed to pick almost every Oscar contender out there for awards consideration. The Tree of Life, despite four major mentions, was ignored for the categories that it most needed: Best Picture and Best Director. The Help got a significant boost as it’s not generally a critic award-friendly film. Shame and Drive each got major boosts with these nominations. While few pay attention to the Satellite Awards as a precursor, looking at trends may give us an idea of what’s emerging as contenders through the awards season.

In addition to the nominees and/or winners listed below, this year, we’re giving you a quick background on each individual precursor including founding year, first awards year and a glimpse at how many predictions the group has gotten right in the last five years. This data can be found below.
