- Seven films will compete for nominations for Best Makeup at this years Oscars: Alice in Wonderland, Barney’s Vision, The Fighter, Jonah Hex, True Grit, The Way Back and The Wolfman.
- The 10 recipients for the Scientific and Technical Achievement Awards were announced by the Academy this week.
- The Directors Guild of America has released their nominees for Best Director, historically one of the best precursors to the films nominated for Best Director and Best Picture. Their nominees are Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), David Fincher (The Social Network), Tom Hopper (The King’s Speech), Christopher Nolan (Inception) and David O. Russell (The Fighter).
- The National Society of Film Critics, the last of the major critics bodies, announced their awards last week. The Social Network led the pack with 4 winners, including Best Actor Jesse Eisenberg.
- The Social Network won Best Picture and Best Director at Friday night’s Broadcast Film Critics Awards. Inception was the biggest winner overall, taking 5 awards.
- Several more guilds released their nominations for the year, including the American Cinema Editors, the American Society of Cinematographers, and the Visual Effects Society.
- The Oscar Pre-Show will be elongated this year, from the traditional 30 minutes to a 90 minute program. Charlie Haykel and Juliane Hare will produce the pre-show for the first time.

- True Grit retook the number one spot last weekend, breaking the $100 million mark.
- Blue Valentine led the limited releases at the box office this weekend, and has already broken the $1 million mark in less than 40 screens.

Oscar Farewell
- Oscar-nominated director Peter Yates passed away at the age of 82. The four-time nominee was cited as director and producer for Breaking Away and The Dresser. A full obituary can be found here.
