Oscar News
- The nominations for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday. The King’s Speech led with 12 nominations, followed by True Grit with 10. A complete list can be found here.
- The Producers Guild of America gave their Best Picture prize to The King’s Speech.
- Another Oscar presenter was announced: former host Hugh Jackman.
- The Golden Raspberries, as always, announced their nominees for Worst of the Year the day before the Oscar announcements. This year, Twilight: Eclipse and The Last Airbender led the pack with 9 nominations apiece.
Review Round-Up
- Biutiful obviously didn’t need strong reviews to get Oscar’s attention, as it garnered 2 nominations on Tuesday before most critics had the chance to review it, and it may not have helped. Metacritic lists the film as only a 59. David Fear is quoted as calling the film “a straight-up strategy,” although all the reviews cite nominee Javier Bardem as being the strength of the feature.
Oscar Box Office
- No Strings Attached, starring Best Actress-nominee Natalie Portman (albeit for another film, Black Swan), was the top film at the box office this weekend. However, it was the worst weekend after Martin Luther King Day since 1992.
New Trailers
No new trailers to feature here.
Oscar Farewell
- Bernd Eichinger, a prominent German screenwriter and producer, died this week at the age of 61. Among his credits were the Oscar-nominated Foreign Films Downfall and The Baader Meinhoff Complex.
