Oscar News
- The 68th Golden Globe Awards were passed out Sunday, and The Social Network took 4 awards to lead the film side of the awards. Other winners, as expected, were Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Annette Bening, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. The biggest story of the evening, though, was host Ricky Gervais, who took the opportunity to sling insults at most of the luminaries at the event.
- The Academy released the final Foreign Language Film short list, 9 films from which the final 5 will be chosen. The finalists are the entries from Algeria, Canada, Denmark (this week’s Golden Globe winner), Greece, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Spain and Sweden.
- BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television, announced their nominations this week. The King’s Speech was the leading nominee, with 14 nominations, followed by Black Swan with 12.
- The last few guilds announced their pre-Oscar nominations, including the Costume Designers Guild and the Golden Reel Awards (for Sound Editing).
- The 2011 Cesar Awards, France’s version of the Oscars, released their nominees this week. Oscar-winner Quentin Tarantino will receive a special award, and among the nominees are last year’s Oscar winners for Best Foreign Language Film (The Secret in their Eyes) and Animated Short (Logorama).
Review Round-Up
- The Way Back was once considered a major Oscar contender, coming from Oscar favorites Peter Weir and Ed Harris, but the film has managed to garner very little traction over awards season. The film still received strong reviews from critics this week, picking up a 66 on Metacritic.
Oscar Box Office
- Non-Oscar contender The Green Hornet was the top film at the box office this weekend. True Grit continued as the top Oscar contender with a 25% dip to $13 million.

Oscar Farewell
- Oscar-nominated actress Susannah York died at the age of 72. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1969 for They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 1972 for Images. A full obituary can be found here.
