We had one film release this past weekend with the potential for Oscar nominations.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

One of the most successful franchises in Oscar history, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker continues the tradition of Oscar consideration. While the prequel trilogy that George Lucas did struggled for Oscar attention, the latest three films have done much better in that department and the final film is a strong contender in a handful of categories.

While it’s unlikely the movie will end up in the top-of-the-line categories, its best opportunities come in numerous craft traditions. Original Score is its best opportunity. The last film in the franchise that John Williams will ever compose could give the Academy’s composers their last opportunity to recognize the legendary work he’s done on the series. The Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, and Visual Effects categories have and will always be the franchise’s strongest chances.

Apart from those four, a few other categories the film could make an appearance in are Film Editing, Cinematography, Production Design, and Costume Design. While few of these are guarantees, I could see at least Production Design being a possibility with the others have far more remote chances.
