As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences).

With a handful of the potential precursors that could have announced this week not present, the only one we had a chance to look at before this article was finalized was the Hollywood Critics Association (formerly the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society), so this post is mostly based on how those films performed there.

But, before we get into this week’s winners and losers, let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week:

Big Winners

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood did incredibly well with this group, with double-digit nominations and that could have something to do with its Hollywood-centric story. We won’t know until we see more nominations.
Bombshell was a surprisingly strong nomination leader, picking up the second-most of the day, suggesting it’s going to be a bit bigger than some were even expecting.
The Irishman was always expected to do well with critics and its performance here is proof that it should be a major player this season.
Waves had a bit of a comeback after its disastrous run through the Spirit Awards nominations, giving it some new life in Oscar season.

Big Losers

Little Women was thought to be a major player, but its anemic nomination count suggests Greta Gerwig’s sophomore effort as a director might have some struggles, but it’s too early to tell.
Robert De Niro was one of two actors thought to be major contenders from the film The Irishman, but he didn’t show up, which is a bit surprising.
Annette Bening‘s film was well received, but it hasn’t been a dominant force in the buzz department lately, so her lack of appearance here might be a symptom of a bigger issue.
