As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences).

With a single important precursor left (Film Independent’s Spirit Awards), we have about all of the information we could possibly get and this year’s Spirit Awards will have little to no impact this year.

But, before we get into this week’s winners and losers, let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week:

Week 11

Tuesday, Feb. 4 – Academy Awards Voting Ends (Official)
Thursday, Feb. 6 – Film Music Critics (Nominations) (Unconfirmed)
Friday, Feb. 7 – Publicists (Awards) (Official)
Saturday, Feb. 8 – Razzies (Nominations) (Official)
Saturday, Feb. 8 – Spirit Awards (Awards) (Official)
Sunday, Feb. 9 – Academy Awards (92nd) (Official)

Big Winners

1917 had an excellent week taking the big prizes at the BAFTA awards, which suggests that it’s Oscar victory is all but assured.
Joker may not have won the whole show, but it did pick up three prizes, which is more than expected. It’s likely go into the Oscars with two of those chances in Actor and Original Score.
Parasite won big from the OFTA and managed to stave off competition for Original Screneplay at both the WGA and BAFTA awards. Things are looking solid for the film picking up two prizes at the Oscars.
Jojo Rabbit has turned the Adapted Screenplay race into a victory lap on the way to the Oscars with wins from both the Writers Guild of America and BAFTA.
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood finally asserted itself in Production Design with a win at the Art Directors Guild, but BAFTA might have caused opinion to shift just a bit.

Big Losers

Little Women was the only film to genuinely lose this week with so few wins and its shot for a second Oscar in Adapted Screenplay being dashed by the love for Jojo Rabbit.
Marriage Story may not have been a direct loser in the last week, but the film continues to go home without any awards, having only picked up two prizes all week, from the OFTA, for Adam Driver in Best Actor and Adapted Song. The film was a hot commodity heading into Oscar season and is looking like it will go home with a single award.
The Irishman started out winning at the National Board of Review, but recent history suggests that the NBR’s awards might be cursed. Of the twelve awards they gave out, only Renee Zellweger, Brad Pitt, 1917 in Cinematography, and Parasite in Foreign Film look to be carrying through. All of the rest have either failed to get nominated (Adam Sandler, Maiden in documentary) or have entirely faded from the race and are now almost all dark horse candidates.
