Looking at the Weekend: September 23-25, 2011

While the array of films this weekend points to a strong competition for first, Abduction looks like the kind of bald movie entertainment that audiences ask “why?” and never show up to. That leaves Dolphin Tale and Moneyball as the films most likely to top the weekend. And I think male audiences are so desirous of something quintessentially “male” that they’ll show up to this baseball drama.

Abduction: We are unbelievably split on this one, so make up your mind how you see fit.
Dolphin Tale: Heartwarming does not always mean good.
Killer Elite: Robert De Niro: desperate for money?
Moneyball: In spite of its sports-centered subject, it’s a film we’re likely to hear a lot about over the coming months.
Weekend: Gay relationship dramas are still a niche field and in spite of their movement into more serious territory, they still probably won’t do well.
