The prospects for this weekend’s box office are not particularly great. Three new wide releases hope to break through the morass of old releases in hopes of finding an audience. Horror, Bollywood, and period dramas are on top and none of them look terribly promising. Barbarian likely has the best chance, an average horror film that piques an interest that often does moderately well with audiences. Bollywood hasn’t had as much success, so Brahmastra isn’t likely to come out on top. Then there’s Medieval. Without a major name to pull audiences to the theater, don’t expect it to do terribly well.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s hard not to see this film as a generic effort even when trying to be original.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Nightmare vacation horror movie could go either way.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I did not find the trailer that scary or interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It seems weird to say that a medieval-set movie looks formulaic, but here you have it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Historical drama doesn’t appear to offer anything new.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A good historical movie can be entertaining and informative, but this looks bleak and confusing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another generic romcom with half a pair of appealing leads.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Schizophrenic comedy from the director of Naughty Grandma is one to skip.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may be cute, but it feels forced, though the cast gamely tried to make it work.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks pretty generic from a Bollywood perspective.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Bollywood adventure film doesn’t look like anything special.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Updating the Shiva legend to modern day might work, but the trailer felt heavy handed and sort of long, not a good sign.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer makes this look like a fairly generic indie drama.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Offbeat French drama earned a Cรฉsar nomination for Vicky Krieps so it could be good.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer doesn’t thrill me, but the few early reviews really seem to like it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The only film that isn’t a generic twist on an existing narrative even makes the esoteric feel generic.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Neil LaBute’s cautionary comic take on Dracula could be hit or miss.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Writer/Director Neil LaBute has made some interesting films, though not in awhile, and it might be good, though I’m not sure it will be.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Finish things off this week with yet another generic supernatural horror film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dutch-Danish co-produced psychological horror film has been compared to Get Out so maybe there’s something there.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Neither the social satire nor the fright came across in the trailer, leaving one with little to go on.
