Two new wide releases will compete for the top of the box office against the second weekend of Don’t Worry, Darling and The Woman King. The Woman King didn’t have the best second-weekend hold, so it’s not likely to compete, but new releases Bros and Smile do have that opportunity. We don’t know how a gay rom com is going to play at the box office as we don’t have any precedents to look at. Smile, on the other hand, is playing towards the Halloween crowd and will likely do well because of that.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A watershed moment, perhaps. The film looks like it has its moments, but they may not work together as a whole.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly publicized gay comedy could be a surprise hit.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I imagine it will be fun for a certain group, but I wonder if Billy Eichner is a strong enough actor to carry a feature film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve done the creepy smile thing before and it is unnerving, but the trailer isn’t.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another lame brain horror film, seek out 1928’s The Man Who Laughs instead.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It’s an effective trailer, but I am just not into horror movies. I will admit the smiling is truly creepy.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Emily Watson is always a treat, but this film looks overly familiar.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Gothic thriller has been getting raves for Emily Watson’s performance.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am fond of Emily Watson as an actress, so could imagine seeing this family drama just for her, though it looks pretty good anyway.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): You can love Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline and not think this looks that good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Romantic comedy for seniors should be a showcase for Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a strong cast that will potentially be wasted by a mediocre film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It wasn’t a hit at the festivals, but it looked charming enough.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks really dumb.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): For a film that bills itself as a comedy, there is precious little in the trailer. It feels like it could have been an enjoyable, if small, film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Conceptually, it’s rather interesting. Whether it actually is depends a lot on execution.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting idea, poor execution.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does feel a little different than most, but not enough to hook me into seeing this film.
