With three new wide releases and nothing that looks particularly stellar, it will be a tough weekend for all newcomers. Dear Evan Hanson might have a shot over the widening The Eyes of Tammy Faye and the re-release of Courageous, but there’s no question the weekend will be poorly attended and might see Shang-Chi triumphing for a fourth weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The musical has never seemed like a fascinating enough concept and a film adaptation isn’t that much more interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early reviews have been mixed at best, but this looks like something audiences will embrace.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Coming from a Tony Award-winning musical, I was really looking forward to this, but the mostly negative reviews have me tamping down my enthusiasm. I will still go see it, but will lower my expectations first.

Wesley Lovell (WL): An intriguing concept, but some of it looks a bit simplistic.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Germany’s submission for Best International Film looks like a total charmer.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer was entertaining and the reviews quite good, so this sounds like a winner.
