Presently, there are three films scheduled for wide release this weekend, going up against the third week of Shang-Chi. It’s possible that two of the three could come out on top. First, we must discard CopShop, which just doesn’t have the kind of draw a film would need to be a box office success. Cry Macho, on the other hand, has Clint Eastwood, who is idolized by the kind of people who would shirk mask mandates and caution to go to the movie theater. Of course, they are also the kind of people to just stay home than spend money on liberal Hollywood propaganda even though Eastwood is far from liberal. Then there’s The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which seeks to dig into the life of Tammy Faye Bakker and her marriage to Jim Bakker, the televangelist who made millions from gullible viewers. The film might have a strange symbiosis in interest between the left and right each, wanting something different from the film. Ultimately, I give the edge to Cry Macho, but wouldn’t be surprised with any particular outcome.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Although the attempt at viewing how Asian-Americans are treated in the United States seems similar to Minari, it might be just different enough to be interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Hot-button issue of imminent deportation for illegal immigrants gets new spin here.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks good at the start of the trailer, but does seem fairly overwrought by the end.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While the trailer doesn’t quite suggest the film will be more than passably fun, that might just be enough.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Pointless, poorly acted nonsense set in a police station manned by morons.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be fun, but will have over the top performances and violence. Not sure it will be my cup of tea.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I can’t get up the interest to give Clint Eastwood anymore of my time or consideration. He may have been a good director, but that time may well be past.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another of Clint Eastwood’s earnest late career attempts that fall short of duplicating the success of his earlier efforts.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The latter day films from Clint Eastwood can be fairly interesting, so I would not count this out, though it feels a little simplistic.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): With Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain, it might be really good even if the subject matter is a bit outside my interest range.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Jessica Chastain’s hyped chances at another Oscar nod look dismal from the trailer and the film’s early reviews
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Jessica Chastain looks to have a great role as the ultimately disgraced Tammy Faye Bakker, and she should be worth watching.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Without knowing much about St. Vincent, the concept doesn’t quite appeal to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Odd duck of a movie about a contemporary singer that is but isn’t a documentary.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Some of the reviews talk about this being very funny, but I find it bewildering and not that engrossing.
